You go to your bathroom slightly turn the water on just enough so there is a great amount of water pressure coming from the shower head. It’s cold and freezing and sounds terrible. You jump in and start shaking. Begin breathing faster and faster as the cold is overpowering. Shivering asking yourself WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS?

Breathing is the most important part of living. Breathing exercises help cool down your nerves and reduce stress. The first part of getting into a cold shower is maintaining a regular breath. In and out of the nose and big deep breaths in and out of the mouth. When your stressed out and finally take the time to take a big deep breath your body can instantly start to calm back down and realize that your stress is only temporary. When you start to focus on something you can actually forget to breath properly and not think clearly. The most practices method is in and out of the nose three-second inhale and four-second exhale. After ever three reps just like exercising take one big deep breathe from your mouth in and slowly exhale a little bit of air at a time. As you take a cold shower practice that same method and after doing it a few times you will realize your body has already adjusted to the temperature.

IN THE NOSE 1 …. 2 ….. 3

OUT THE NOSE 1…. 2 ….. 3 …. 4

IN THE MOUTH 1 …. 2 ….3 …. 4

OUT THE MOUTH 1 …. 2 …. 3 … 4 … 5 … 6 … 7

Practice this time and time again. Till you feel relaxed. You do not need to be in a cold shower to do this. This method even helps with stretching. Bend over at try to touch your toes. If you can not , breath in and out of your mouth slowly and gradually move further into the stretch. As your breathing improves so does your flexibility. I will follow-up with this in a YOGA article. There are very many different breathing methods and helpful for many things like anxiety, depression, and much more. What ever method works best for you continue to do that method.

DIVE RIGHT IN !

Make this a challenge ! Don’t worry you won’t get hypothermia unless you plan on taking a cold shower for well over 35 minutes. In most cases you can survive for up to 3 hours in a cold shower. I wouldn’t push the limits that far. A few seconds at a time is enough to build up a tolerance till you can feel comfortable and go for a few minutes at a time. I started taking cold showers for over in 2015. I prefer to take them in the morning  to wake myself up and be alert. Sometimes night-time cold shower after I wash up. Especially its right after a gym or yoga session so I love taking the cold shower immediately to help improve overall recovery.

CONCLUSION

If cold showers are not the route you want to go I highly recommend and suggest Cryotherapy! It is becoming a much bigger type of therapy. With the same benefits as taking cold showers. It is becoming more and more popular around the world. Many athletes use this method to speed up their recovery. WIM HOF the ” ICEMAN ” is what got me into start taking cold showers. Like always do your own research and play it safe. Dare to try something new and if you are already taking cold showers try an ice bath. The benefits are endless. Good luck and let me know if this article helped you !
